Packaging Kombucha- which can is better: PET vs Aluminium for SA
Share
If you brew kombucha and you're ready to start packaging it properly, the can you choose matters — for shelf appeal, for protecting your brew, and for how easily you can seal it yourself. Here's how PET and aluminium stack up for South African producers, and what actually works when you're starting out.
What kombucha needs from its packaging
- Carbonation handling — brew is live and often lightly fizzy, so pressure matters
- Protection from light — light can affect flavour over time
- Shelf appeal — your brew's colour and clarity are part of the sell
- Easy, affordable sealing — especially for small batches
PET cans
Clear PET cans show off your brew's colour and clarity, which is a genuine selling point on a fridge shelf. They're recyclable, light, and — crucially for a small producer — you can seal them yourself on a can seamer in seconds, in boxes as small as 200. That makes them ideal for testing flavours and growing without huge upfront orders.
The trade-off: clear packaging doesn't block light the way aluminium does, so keep stock refrigerated and sell through at a reasonable pace.
Aluminium cans
Aluminium is light-proof, has a premium feel and is endlessly recyclable. The catch for small producers is the minimum order: aluminium cans are typically bought pre-printed from manufacturers in pallet quantities — thousands at a time — and are most efficient filled on a proper canning line. For an emerging kombucha brand, that's a big commitment before you've proven the product.
The carbonation question
This is the important one. Kombucha is alive and can keep fermenting and building carbonation in the package. Control your carbonation before canning, keep cans refrigerated, and sell through stock promptly to manage pressure. Still and lightly sparkling brew suit on-site canning best; if you produce highly carbonated kombucha, manage pressure carefully and choose packaging rated for it.
What small SA producers actually use
Most kombucha brands start with clear PET cans and a seamer: low minimum order, great shelf appeal, seal-it-yourself flexibility, and no industrial line required. As you scale, you can revisit aluminium once your volumes justify the minimums.
